This place is creative and alternative solution to many issues surrounding the art worlds of Atlanta. Its more than an alternative space, it's a place where culture, politics and media are combined in a working, living environment to suit the needs of creating art and networking.
The first exhibition, Westide Revolution, was shown on January, 21st 2006 by nuSpace Media. The works ranged from photography, painting, sculpture and mixed media. The show started at 8pm and ended in the early part of the morning for the most of us. Live music rained the halls and filled the rooms with mystic vibes. Drum circles appeared like crop circles where culture and art were mixed. The free drinks were flowing and the individual spirit was showing. If you think you have seen it all, you haven't. Ever been in a naughty photo booth or been physically part of the work, instead of just viewing it? The English Avenue Yards is a new building project for artist that creates a lifestyle, subculture and urban bureaucracy with art to invoke change.
Art in the 21st century has become a machine. Some of the residence at the English Avenue Yards, where simply there to mass produce mall art and sell it for a profit. It felt like a strip mall where the essence and meaning was stripped and robbed. These spaces were sold out to companies that are trying to tap into the art world and drive the force into a profit. Those units degrade and undermine the alternative space and subculture. If we strip the meaning and essence down to nothing more than a mass produced idea trying to make a buck, than we have simply become a prouduct of society, instead of producing and driving that society. Art is a fragile force that has the power to make a difference and the exhibition of the individual art was very powerful, while the studio mall art was like a stab in the heart.
The alternative spaces in Atlanta will continue to grow and change the art worlds around us, hopefully in a way that satisfies both the art and the survival of the artist. The English Aveue Yards gives the individual a place and a chance to make a significant impact on society and create a counterculture where the artist can live and work amoung others that shart a similar passion.
